Live Effects for Trumpet

A few summers back I was going to play a gig down in San Diego with an 80’s band I played with in college. Back when I was gigging a lot in San Diego I had a pretty large effects set-up. I started out with an old Roland Space Echo, then moved on to a pedal board of guitar effects, and finally built up an 8 space rack case to carry everything: wireless receiver, a couple of digital multi effects units and a power amp for my monitor, plus a big midi foot pedal to control it all.

Over the years I’ve gotten rid of most of that gear, and I’m now a plane ride away from San Diego so I wanted to keep my live rig to a bare minimum. I was originally going to just take my trumpet down, but then I started thinking it would be nice to at least have a digital delay. Then I got to thinking that I own a Beaglebone Black, maybe I could put together a compact effects rig using parts I already had.

As it turned out a conflict came up and I wasn’t able to play the gig. However I did make some progress on my idea and now the project has caught my interest and taken on a life of it’s own.

Here are my posts on the project:

Architecture for Live Effects

I already had a Mackie 0402VLZ4 mixer and a Beaglebone Black, so the only thing I needed was a way to get audio in and out of the BBB. The…
