Midi Trumpet Controller
This is a concept I came up with a long time ago, but I’ve been inspired recently to come back to it. Basically it’s a new paradigm for a Midi controller that emulates a valved brass instrument. I’ll use this blog to document the idea and my progress towards developing a working prototype.
Here are the posts on the Midi Trumpter Controller
MIDI TRUMPET 4.0
I’ve constructed version 4.0 of the hardware. Notable features are: Pictures of the hardware and a schematic are below:
MIDI TRUMPET 3.0 Update
So after a bit of a hiatus I’m back working on this project. I completed the V3 hardware some time ago and recently I’ve made quite a bit of progress…
Midi Trumpet 3.0 HW Design
Although I haven’t posted recently ideas have been burbling around in my brain and I’ve purchased some parts for the 3.0 design. I’ve made the following hardware choices: Component Selection…
Midi Trumpet 3.0 Planning
While 2.0 is a big improvement over 1.0, there’s still plenty of room for improvement. Here’s my goals for the next iteration: More compact form factor. I’d like to be…
MIDI Trumpet 2.0
I’ve finally completed a second hardware platform. It now features: 128×64 Monochrome display Much more ergonomic design Here is a side view showing most of the mechanical elements: The bottom…
Making a Arduino programmer
So to get USB midi working I needed an in-circuit programmer for an Arduino. It’s very easy to make one from an Arduino, I used a nano I had with…
USB Midi with Arduino Pro Micro
UPDATE The USB Midi library now works out of the box.. Just include the library in your project, load the sketch, and your device will show up as a midi…
MIDI Trumpet Next Steps
The first prototype works OK, but there are a couple things I’d like to address: – The form factor is pretty awkward. The push buttons don’t feel very much like…
MIDI Trumpet Software
There’s obviously been a gap in activity, but I’ve picked it back up lately and I wanted to finish off the documentation for the prototype I build and lay out…
HW Design (Mechanical)
Here’s what it looks like put together: You can see the Arduino shield, with connections to 3 pushbuttons and the slider on the top of the box. The cable coming…
HW Design (Electrical)
Here’s the schematic: The box in the middle is an Arduino Uno, which has everything we’ll need for this project. Breath Controller: The Gordophone blog has some great information on building…
So what’s this great new idea
We’ll have a breath controller and three valves just like the EVI; however, instead of the left hand manipulating a discrete control to select the harmonic, we’ll have a continuous…
Why bother with a new concept for a Midi Trumpet Controller?
Currently there is really only one design for a Midi Controller that emulates a valved wind instrument, namely the EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument) developed by Neil Steiner (see Patchman Music…
